WARNING: What you're about to read is VERY taboo!
The REASON YOU'RE LOW...
The science behind reduced sexual desire in women dealing with depression, ADHD, anxiety, or those on medications for physiological and psychiatric conditions is complex and there's alot that goes into it!
I'm going to nerd out in this first paragraph and I'll explain WHY. It's the FIRST reason why the issue is worsening for women...
Depression and anxiety often disrupt certain neurotransmitter systems, particularly serotonin and dopamine, which are crucial for mood regulation and sex drive and desire and self esteem. These mental health conditions can lead to decreased libido by impacting overall energy levels and mood stability. ADHD, characterized by difficulties in attention and impulsivity, can affect sexual interest and engagement, often due to its impact on focus and energy. Basically, it's not in the forefront of your mind (and if so, not for long!).
Medications used to manage these conditions, such as antidepressants, antipsychotics, or stimulant medications, frequently come with side effects that include reduced sexual drive. For women with PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) or Diabetes, hormonal imbalances and metabolic disturbances can seriously impact an already-diminished libido. The hormonal fluctuations associated with PCOS often lead to decreased levels of estrogen and progesterone, which are critical for sexual function. Diabetes, on the other hand, can lead to vascular issues and nerve damage that affect sexual response. Understanding these scientific factors is crucial for addressing the impact they have on sexual desire.

Here's a LIST...do you fall on any of these? IF SO, BE KIND TO YOURSELF! YOU CAN DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!
Depression: Often leads to decreased libido due to changes in brain chemistry, energy levels, and mood. Antidepressant medications used to treat depression may also contribute to reduced sexual desire.
Anxiety Disorders: Generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and other anxiety-related conditions can impact sexual function by causing stress, worry, physical changes that keep you from "getting there" ...
ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder): ADHD can affect sexual function through issues with focus, impulsivity, and energy levels, which may impact sexual desire and engagement.
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS): This hormonal disorder can lead to elevated levels of androgens (male hormones), which may affect sexual desire and arousal. PCOS is also associated with insulin resistance, which can impact sexual health.
Diabetes: Both type 1 and type 2 diabetes can lead to sexual dysfunction due to nerve damage (neuropathy), poor blood flow (vascular issues), and hormonal imbalances. Diabetes management can also influence libido and sexual function.
Menopause: The decline in estrogen levels during menopause can lead to vaginal dryness, decreased libido, and discomfort during sex. Menopause-related symptoms can impact sexual desire and function.
Endometriosis: A condition where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus, causing pain and discomfort. This pain can affect sexual desire and function. I have personally come across so many women who are dealing with this! AND SUFFERING IN SILENCE! SMH
Fibroids: Uterine fibroids can cause pelvic pain, heavy menstrual bleeding, and discomfort, which may impact sexual function and libido.
Vulvodynia: A chronic pain condition affecting the vulva, which can cause discomfort or pain during sexual activity, impacting sexual desire and function.
Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome: Persistent pain in the pelvic area that is not due to an identifiable medical condition can interfere with sexual function and desire.
Sexual Dysfunction Disorders: Includes issues such as hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD), arousal disorder, and orgasmic disorder, which directly affect sexual desire and function.
Thyroid Disorders: Hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism can impact sexual function due to hormonal imbalances that affect energy levels, mood, and libido. SEE OUR LAB OPTIONS HERE TO SEE IF THIS APPLIES TO YOU, AND IF YOU'RE HAVING SYMPTOMS
Gynecological Conditions: Conditions such as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) or ovarian cysts can cause discomfort and affect sexual function.
Psychiatric Medications: Certain medications used to treat psychiatric conditions, such as antidepressants and antipsychotics, can have side effects that impact sexual desire and function.
Pregnancy and Postpartum Issues: Hormonal changes during and after pregnancy can affect libido and sexual function. Postpartum depression can also contribute to reduced sexual desire. This is so underrated. The hormonal fluctuations are a serious connection to how women "bounce back emotionally, and sexually". If we are in charge of a household, children, and working with a spouse, chances are it's going to be more difficult to feel sexual again. Not to mention breastfeeding releases oxytocin, which further decreases interest...
The Importance of Sex Drive for Self-Esteem and Confidence
Sex drive plays a vital role in a woman’s self-esteem, self-image, and overall confidence. A healthy sexual drive contributes significantly to how a woman perceives herself and her attractiveness. When a woman feels desired and experiences sexual pleasure, it reinforces her self-worth and fosters a positive self-image. So....then on the flipside... a lack of sexual interest or dissatisfaction in sexual experiences can lead to feelings of inadequacy and diminished self-confidence. Sexual health is deeply intertwined with personal identity and self-esteem; a fulfilling sex life can be a powerful affirmation of one’s attractiveness and worth. Addressing and enhancing sexual desire can therefore not only improve physical pleasure but also uplift a woman’s self-perception, desire, self-esteem, and confidence.
Now, I'm not saying that this is the answer to all your issues, but I do know that many of my female clients are ashamed or worry of impending shame to discuss this side of themselves...Coherent Care is about creating a safe space to address all mental health sides of a woman....and this is one important side, Lady!
The Taboo Nature of Sex Drive, Desire and Its Mental Health Implications
Sex and pleasure remain taboo subjects in many cultures, which can be profoundly detrimental to mental health. The stigma and silence surrounding female sexuality often lead to feelings of shame and guilt, preventing open discussions about sexual health and needs. This cultural boundary creates barriers to seeking help and exploring solutions, leading to worsening feelings of isolation and frustration. The lack of discussion about sexual health can hinder personal growth and emotional well-being, reinforcing negative stereotypes and preventing individuals from achieving a satisfying and healthy sexual life.
Breaking down these taboos and fostering an open, accepting environment is crucial for improving mental health and promoting a more positive relationship with one’s sexuality.
